- Dog Related Mailing Lists
-
- There are several email lists on canines and related topics. Note that
- those lists maintained by listservers often offer digest options to
- reduce the amount of incoming mail. Also "your name" in the
- subscription process is your real name. Eg, I might subscribe to FCR-L
- by sending
-
- sub FCR-L Cindy Tittle Moore
-
- in the body of my message to that address. However, watch out for
- other lists that may be served by different sofware and require
- something like:
-
- subscribe FCR-L tittle@io.com
-
- Other lists are NOT automated, and are contacted by request addresses
- that are maintained by real live people, so a short request like
- "Please add me to the herding list." is appropriate for these lists.
-
- Please do not sent mail directly to the list asking to be added or
- deleted from the list. It's poor form because your request gets spit
- out to all the subscribers on the list; creating unnecessary bandwidth
- and putting useless email into mailboxes around the country. So use
- the contact addresses provided!
-
- I have marked exceptionally high volume lists with a "+". I have not
- personally read/checked all the lists myself, so feel free to let me
- know if a particular list is also high volume. High volume is defined
- as >20 email articles a day on a regular basis.
-
- Watch out for the common error of substituting the numeral 1 for the
- letter l. I've tried to make this clear by capitalizing wherever it
- seemed appropriate below.
-
- Finally note that subscription may be arbitrated by the list owner at
- any time. Should a list owner decide that a particular individual
- should not be subscribed or remain subscribed, that is their
- prerogative. Inflammatory posts, baiting, or flaming other individuals
- on the list may be grounds for removal. Most lists make their
- perefences known in a welcome file mailed out upon subscription.
-
- GENERAL
-
- +CANINE-L
-
- To subscribe, send email to listserv@psuvm.bitnet or
- listserv@psuvm.psu.edu with sub canine-l your name in the body of
- the message This is a high volume list and is much more chatty and
- personal than RPD. Flames are strongly discouraged. Note that it's
- poor form to get on RPD and bash Canine-L or to get on Canine-L and
- bash RPD. If you don't like one or the other, simply don't subscribe
- to it. The readers of both will thank you.
-
- ACTIVITY SPECIFIC
-
- AGILITY
-
- Kathy Kral is the list administrator for AGILITY-L, a mailing list
- for discussing the sport of agility, formed in mid April 1994. To

- rec.hunting, which is gatewayed into a hunting email list. That is,
- all posts to rec.hunting appear in the mailing list, and all email
- to the list also appears in the newsgroup. While the basic topic is
- on hunting, discussion of handling and training gun dogs (pointers,
- flushers/springers, retrievers) is welcome and encouraged. To
- subscribe, send email to LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU with the single
- line subscribe hunting your-name in the body of the message.
- Substitute your own name for your name, eg. subscribe hunting Jane
- Doe.
-
- In January 1995, Chris opened a second list which he hopes to
- gateway to a newsgroup at some point (as hunting does). This is
- GUNDOG-L, and is a mailing list devoted specifically to those who
- hunt with their dogs. To subscribe, send email to
- LISTSERV@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU with subscribe GUNDOG-L your-first-name

- explicitly pro-hunting -- debating moral issues of using dogs for
- hunting or hunting in general are not permitted.

-
- +OBEDIENCE DISCUSSION

- OBED-DISC your-name in the body of the message. Substitute your own

- represented the list. Talk can and does turn to the problems of
- training in general for a variety of things, such as hunting tests,
- tracking tests, and so on. This list is NOT intended for basic
- behavior problems such as housetraining, chewing, etc! To subscribe
- send email to listserver@reepicheep.gcn.uoknor.edu with sub OBED-L

- ______________________________________________________________________
-
- Setting up an Email List
-
- If you have determined that there is no mailing list for your favorite
- breed, and there seems to be an interest in such a mailing list, feel free
- to start one up (and let me know about it).
-
- WHAT CAN I USE? WHAT IS AVAILABLE?
-
- There are many kinds of email lists. But here is a run down of some of the
- options available if you are running unix:
-
-
- * A simple mail alias. You ask your administrator to give you an
- alias of the form
-
- yourlist-l: :include:/yourpath/yourlist-l.list
- yourlist-l-request: youremailaddr
-
-
- where yourlist-l is the name of the list, and your home path is
- used for yourpath. yourlist-l.list contains a list of email
- addresses of the people subscribed to the list. Such addresses
- traditionally have the -request address for administrative stuff,
- such as asking to be added to the list. Its pros include that it
- is easy to set up and it is more than adequate for small lists
- (less than 50 subscribers) with a stable subscription list. The
- drawbacks include having to maintain the subscription by hand,
- especially if there are many changes, and responses typically go
- back to the originator, unless the person takes care to send it
- back to the list itself.
-
- There are variations on this approach. You might have the
- yourlist-l address point to you, and then filter incoming email
- yourself via a program like procmail or filter (faqs?).
-
- * Listserv. This was originally written at Bitnet and is the first
- of the automated mailing lists. As more bitnetinternet gateways
- appeared, more Internet people got on them. The software was
- finally ported to VMS and unix this year. Many people consider
- this the best of all the automated mailing lists. Automated
- subscription handling, digest versions of the list, archival of
- email, and retrieval of files of interest are all offered. The
- main problem is that if it is not installed at your site, it's
- hard for you to do it yourself, since it requires being installed
- by root. However, since lists can be managed remotely via email,
- there are several sites around willing to host new lists (see
- below).
-
- * Listproc. Before listserv was ported to unix, a clone was written,
- originally called listserv, but forced last year to rename itself
- listproc; this is a program much like Listserv. The options and
- behavior are slightly different. SImilar drawback if it's not
- already installed at your site, or your system administrator is
- not amendable to installing it.
-
- * Majordomo. This was written for unix systems, and it's fairer to
- say that it was inspired by Listserv. Similar functionality,
- different syntax for commands and stuff. A very technical faq (ie,
- how to install it, rather than how to use it) is available via
- anonymous ftp to rtfm.mit.edu under
- pub/usenet/news.answers/mail/majordomo-faq. Same type of
- drawbacks.
-
- This list barely scratches the surface, though. You will need to ask around
- at your site to find other options that may be available to you. A general
- overview of unix based email software is available via anonymous ftp to
- rtfm.mit.edu in pub/usenet/news.answers/mail/setup/unix; all three files (
- part1, part2, part3) are part of the FAQ.
-
- HOW DO I SET ONE UP?
-
- There are a number of options open to you. I can't possibly get into all
- the details, since mailing lists are complicated by many factors, including
- the sheer number of operating systems that they may run on. But here are
- some general suggestions, tips, etc.
- * First try asking your own system administrator or postmaster if
- they can set up a mailing list for you.
- * Most mailing lists can be run remotely. So you might look around
- for a host site. For example, I actually helped set up most of the
- lists on majordomo@netcom.com above (no, I can't do any more --
- I've maxed out), but they are administered by people on different
- sites entirely.
- + If there are a number of people interested in the list, you
- might have everyone check to see if their system will set up
- a mailing list.
- + Try sending email to lstsrv-l@uga.cc.uga.edu; they will find
- a host system for you. Tell them the name of the list, its
- purpose, and who the list admin is to be.
-
